Effect of Optimism and Self-esteem on Quality of Life of College Students

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of optimism and self-esteem on the quality of life of college students. Tests including t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and stepwise multiple regression were conducted to determine optimism, self-esteem and quality of life in 173 college students. Results are as follows: First, according to general characteristics, male students reported a higher quality of life than their female counterparts. Relationship difficulties with colleagues was associated with a lower quality of life, rather than the presence of academic difficulties. Second, the results demonstrated a significant positive correlation between quality of life and optimism and self-esteem in college students. Third, the most influential factor on students¡¯ quality of life was found to be self-esteem, accounting for 28% of the variance.
